Victor Pushparaj, an Indian origin scientist is attempting to build artificial muscles from carbon nanofibres. Victor Pushparaj is a scientist at the Rensselaer’s Polytechnic Institite in Troy, New York.
Electric motors and pneumatic devices had been used as artificial muscles. But these were found to be jerky and produced uneven movement. At present, electro active polymers (EAP’s) are being extensively used as artificial muscles. It is a plastic material and changes shape when it is activated electrical or chemical stimulus. The problem associated with the use of EAP is that they are not mechanically robust and get fatigued very soon.
The team led by Pushparaj conducted experiment to demonstrate the ability of nanotubes to resist fatigue. Millions of nanotubes was packed vertically into a two-millimetre square block. The block was compressed frequently over an interval of 0.75 seconds for 100 hours.
The team noticed that the nanotubes buckled in but they regained their shape as soon as the compression was removed. They found that the block returned to its original position even after 500,000 compressions.
The report of the experiment was published in the July edition of Nature nanotechnology.
The experiment was the first ever probe to learn the fatigue behavior of carbon nano tubes. A major advancement in muscle tissue implantation and artificial limb construction is expected. Experiments are going on to make carbon nanotubes compatible as biomaterial. A major break through in tissue science is expected.
